SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Irvin Kochel Center

An essential part of every student's experience
at Penn State Erie is centered in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Here students develop valuable basic communication skills in English, foreign languages, and speech, develop critical-thinking skills, explore their cultural heritage, and critically examine themselves, their society, and the world. Many decide to pursue a degree in the liberal arts and the many career paths available in those disciplines.

Our undergraduates also benefit from the resources and opportunities provided by a major research institution while enjoying the advantages of learning in a smaller setting.

And in that setting, they learn from a highly accomplished faculty that includes scholars with international research reputations in communication, history, political science, psychology, and literature, award-winning creative writers, and teachers with professional  experience in television broadcasting and public relations.

In addition, the school plays a vital role in the college's cultural life. Many special events are held, and students also participate in a wide variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, including varsity sports, theatre, bands, choir, the student newspaper (The Behrend Beacon), and the college literary magazine (Lake Effect).
