SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
An essential part of every student's
experience Here students develop valuable basic communication skills in English, foreign languages, and speech, develop critical-thinking skills, explore their cultural heritage, and critically examine themselves, their society, and the world. Many decide to pursue a degree in the liberal arts and the many career paths available in those disciplines. And in that setting, they learn from a highly accomplished faculty that includes scholars with international research reputations in communication, history, political science, psychology, and literature, award-winning creative writers, and teachers with professional experience in television broadcasting and public relations.
In addition, the school plays a vital role in
the college's cultural life. Many special events are held, and
students also participate in a wide variety of co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities, including varsity sports, theatre, bands,
choir, the student newspaper (The Behrend Beacon), and the
college literary magazine (Lake Effect). H&SS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, is to integrate teaching, research, and service in a way that will enable us to establish innovative academic programs, encourage nationally-recognized faculty scholarship, and promote professional service and community outreach.
